What a performance against Kettering, terrific defence, patience and attacking pressure culminating in a fine result - hats off to the 1st XV.

..... and the Beests made it 'the double' on the day - excellent play by the Derby sides

Report from Kettering website:

"‘Kettering Lose Plot in Last Quarter!’

Kettering Blues bid for an immediate return to Midlands 1 virtually ended with this defeat at home to Derby, even with only six league played the Blues now know that they must win all their remaining games and also hope that the unbeaten teams at the top of the table drop points! This game was always going to be a hard encounter and with twenty minutes left on the clock it was proving just that with Derby just having a three point lead, but that last twenty minutes was nothing short of embarrassing as Kettering capitulated and allowed their opponents to run in twenty eight unanswered points.

Kettering kicked off in perfect weather conditions and were quickly into their stride having all the early play and they took a deserved lead with a Tim Jones penalty, Derby though began to get into the game and although both sides looked good with the ball in hand, defences were on top until five minutes from half time, Derby equalised with a penalty as the Kettering backs were penalised for crossing as they tried to move the ball out of defence.

Almost on the half time whistle the Derby open side was lucky not to be red carded instead of yellow as he kicked out at Kevin Osborne, this reduction to fourteen men should have seen the hosts on the ascendancy but instead it seemed to galvanise Derby into action and they held out for the half time whistle.

Half Time: Kettering 3 Derby 3

With a man still missing for Derby at the start of the second half Kettering sensed their chance but after creating some good pressure they managed to lose the ball and their visitors cleared their lines, and from one such incident the Blues conceded another penalty and Derby took the lead from the resulting kick.

So coming up to the final quarter it was all to play for, just three points in it, but with Derby perhaps now looking the stronger side, and then it all went wrong for the Blues as Derby suddenly ran riot, scoring four converted tries as the whole Kettering side just seemed to switch off doing all the basic skills. Anyway perhaps it was just one of those days, let’s certainly hope so, and lets hope they sort things out for next week as they travel to what are certainly new league opponents in the shape of Melton Mowbray."

Yes great results. Need to build on that for the other tough league games coming up soon (not forgetting Preston Grasshoppers - 7 from 7, but ripe for an upset surely!)
