Report from Burton site, not quite the same literary style as the one from 4-scores!

Burton ‘B’ team played host in a return fixture against Derby and narrowly lost the spoils in a hard fought physical encounter. Burton started slowly and gave their visitors too much time on the ball allowing them to play their running game. However, good stout defence by Burton kept them at bay until ill discipline gave Derby the chance to go 3-0 in the lead. Burton responded well and put Derby under considerable pressure, particularly in the scrums, and from one such scrum Stu Hutton picked up from the base and carried his immense bulk over the line for a try that Dave Ward converted to put Burton 7-3 in the lead. The Burton forwards continued to use their dominance to full advantage and after driving the visitors back up the field the resultant scrum saw Ben Stone unleash his pace and power to surge through the Derby ranks and score a try to increase Burton’s lead to 12-3 at half-time.

Not long after the break Ward increased Burton’s lead with a well struck penalty that sailed through the uprights from some forty metres out. Unfortunately, as so often happens Burton then stopped playing and allowed Derby back into the game with two sloppy unconverted tries taking the score to 15-p13 inp Burton’s favour. More forward pressure from the Burton pack was soon rewarded with a score when Ian Fiztgerald drove over for an unconverted try to put Burton 20-p13 inp the lead and looking safe with only five minutes remaining. But Derby had not heard of the word defeat as they hit back with two late scores and a conversion on the final whistle saw them snatch victory 20-25.
