Derby Developmen XV 5 Casuals 14
Despite missing several players, Casuals were still able to field a strong side in the run up to the cup game against Nottinghamians on the 10th.
Casuals had the upper hand throughout the game in the scrums and mauls, taking all their own lineout ball as well, but were unable to convert the superiority into any points in the first half.
The bonus was that the team slipped into the now established patterns in the forwards, but the backs were not able round off their moves , despite having a good supply of ball.
Despite dominating the scrums and driving the Derby side back endlessly in the mauls, Casuals were not rewarded until the second half. Casuals set up yet another maul , and again sent Derby backwards, and as the forwards crossed the Derby goal line, Phil Ashford dived in to touch down. Matt Hanton converted.
Derby hit back immediately as their stand off sliced through a big hole in Casuals defence and ran fully 40 metres without a hand being laid on him for a comfortable try.
It was Hanton who provided the next score. Coming back on after being temporarily substituted, he moved to full back. It was centre Hobson who somehow found the strength to ship a long ball out, and Hanton coming into the line, stopped as he received the ball, throwing the opposition completely, creating a huge gap, and with a deft side step, he raced through to touch down, He converted the try himself.
This was a good team performance, and next week's cup game is eagerly anticipated
40m, the cheeky get, it was more like 60

Posted - 05 February 2007 : 08:10:46 Devs 5-14 Casuals modesty prevents me from telling you about my superb dummy kick inside our own 10m line, which had 3 of the opposoition soaring through the air like Thrushes (couldn'tmanage the OLE though) then outstanding pace to break the cover tackle, with enough acceleration to scorch the defence and score!
