Sandal 7s Tournament Report.

Pace, power, pillaging and passion. P#ck#ng awesome!!! This team punched far above their weight both metaphorically and literally as well as being probably the youngest squad we were certainly one of the smallest but boy did we have some gas!

Set pieces were a bit of a problem in most of the matches but the tackle and turnover counts were enormous led by Matt Shucksmith who never gave up, until a nasty shoulder injury in the semi final, the Derby Colts ensured they had plenty of ball. Then it was work the pitch create some space and put away the speedsters it didn't matter who, the Von Ryan Express, the gazelle like Cornfield, Huddlestone the hare, George "whippet" Polglass all showed excellent class, nor were the others the support cast. Mike put in a man of the match performance against York before getting injured against West Bridgeford and therefore not able to play the last 2 games, Tom Goode (16) showed us all how to play 7s and engineered the quarter final win. Shucksmith should be in prison for the amount of ball he stole. Charlie was a tower of strength and led the side brilliantly. Simmo was everywhere, if it moved he hit it and he passed like a scrum half and Alex, despite a "stomach bug", tackled and created as well as showing pace to spare.

Derby 27 v 5 York. Tries, Cornfield 2, Polglass, Shucksmith, Goode.
Conversions, Robertson 1. MOM, Robertson

Sandal 26 v 5 Derby. Tries. Milton

West Bridgeford 0 v 38 Derby. Tries, Polglass 3, Milton 2, Long.
Conversions, Woodward 2, Polglass 2.

Qualifying 2nd meant a quarter final against group 2 winners Moortown. Dizzy heights for Ryan and Charlie who played here the previous year and... well lets leave it at not winning a match.

Moortown had qualified from a very strong group and Colin, thinking the unthinkable rang home and told his wife he'd be leaving soon. Wrong. Matt and Simmo led the tackling, Tom was all calm and cool, Charlie, Tom, George and Ryan crossed the whitewash, Charlie converted twice and Moortown hardly ventured out of their half.

Derby 24 v 0 Moortown.

A superb performance. To cap it all Colin was too scared to phone Helen and so yours truly had to break the news gently.

Somehow we were drawn against Sandal in the semi final. No excuses they were bigger but not quicker. Simply a very good 7s team who did not find us as "easy" opposition. For our team it was one match too many.

Semi Final result Sandal 29 v 12 Derby. This was the official scoreline but we can only remember George dotting down.

This was a great day to remember and the team can be very proud of what they achieved. Many thanks to Mike Chapman and his team at Sandal for a well organised tournament and a thoroughly enjoyable day. We look forward to coming back next year with essentially the same team.

Great performance in the Sandal 7s today. JT is doing the full report, but here are a few musings from me:

This tournament was full of Colts sides from clubs in National Leagues and North 1 - always very strong rugby. Sandal were the eventual winners and beat Derby in the league section (where Derby were the only team to score a try against them) and again in the semis when we were about done. Our performance against Moortown (not a big club, but one that has done well at this age group in National Competitions) in the 1/4 final was outstanding to beat them 24 - 0. The tackle count in this game and the semi against Sandal was massive.

All 10 players did brilliantly, but a special mention goes to Matt Shucksmith whose work rate in winning possession and tackling was phenominal. Unfortunately he may have re-dislocated his shoulder in a tackle at the end of the semi , but hopefully it only 'popped out' and he will be able to play on tour!

Speaking to the Sandal coach afterwards he said none of their players play for the Colts, they all play in the 1st or 2nd team, 1 has played for England and all but one for Yorkshire (age group rugby). At probably 2 stone per man heavier than the Derby side it was not suprising their strength told in the end!
