You need to get masarella back at hooker & then you could claim an Italian front row...or at least one that sounds like an Italian restaurant waiter's roll call!
2 Italians & an Hemingtonite doesnt sound right!
Rumour was going round the vilage that Rob's wife (Claire) had to all the driving yesterday as Rob couldnt turn the steering wheel lol!

A wet and windy day at Haslams was buoyed up 15 minutes before kickoff with the arrival of our new kit sponsored by Jorrocks (now open until 3am Friday and Saturday) and Jagermeister (made from 56 herbs, fruits, woods, barks and roots from all over the world. For example, cinnamon from Sri Lanka, bitter oranges from Australia, ginger root from southern Asia, red sandalwood from East India, blueberries from Europe... and, of course, the secret herbs for the secret recipe developed by Curt Mast), and with it the new nickname “The Meisters” (thanks to Owen West for that!) .

The match started with Derby losing the toss and after a fair amount of scrappy play Ashbourne took the lead, spreading the ball wide after yet another Derby knock-on, their winger crossing the line in the corner. The conversion attempt was missed. It didn’t take long for Derby to respond, with new 4th team signing Louis Gandalfo getting the ball on our 10 metre line and running through the Ashbourne line to score, missing the subsequent conversion attempt with some style. Louis has come across on a free transfer from the Beests and we are very grateful that he has! It didn’t take long for Louis to score again, spotting a dog-leg in the Ashbourne defence, cutting between the fly half and inside centre to score under the posts, again scuffing the conversion attempt along the floor. The next try followed scrappy play by Ashbourne, a kick through by inside centre Stu Smith and then Luke Hos ending up almost going into touch. Luckily for us the Ashbourne winger kept the ball in, Luke picked it up, skipped past two defenders and scored in the corner. By this point Louis had been removed from kicking duties by Alex Poyser who was almost, but not quite, as bad. This left the score at 15-5 at halftime and the match in the balance as we were playing into the wind for the 2nd half.

Early in the 2nd half the Meisters again let Ashbourne back into the game with a mazy run from their full back Griffiths ending with a good individual score under the posts which was duly converted by their captain Rowlands. Derby struck back immediately, a low kick-off resulting in a fumble from the Ashbourne defence, with the ball being duly collected by Flower. A quick ruck ensued and the ball again went to Louis who danced his way over from the Ashbourne line to give us some breathing space at 20-12. Strong defence from the Derby pack saw us through a sticky 10 minutes in our 22 with big hits going in from all the forwards. The match was finally settled with the ball popping out of the side of the scrum, Alex Poyser picking it up to beat the winger and full back to score another excellent individual try to leave the score at 25-12 at the final whistle.

This was a good result for the 1st match of the season, and hopefully we can take the positives out of this match into the next match and leave some of the poorer aspects behind (like trying to pass the ball out of contact when a ruck would have been the better option, and the huge amount of knock-ons). I have to say a big thanks to all the players for turning out, particularly Rob Higgins playing his first match as hooker (he played mainly on the wing last year. It was also good to get yet more new signings into the 4th team; Charlie Walton (who like me is from Ashbourne!), Stu Smith, Lambrini and Welshy from the Uni.

Team was:

Lamacraft, Matveichuck, Walton, Smith, Horsfield (rep. Murphy 60 mins), Gandalfo. Poyser, Patilla, Higgins, Loretta, Wilson, Burton (rep. Dawes 40mins), Adams, Mansley, Flower.
