Newark v Derby, away - League Midland 2 East.
Lost 5-41
Scorer: Try; Fitz Taua'a
It was a frustrating day for Newark as they went down 5-41 to second
placed Derby at Haslams.
In the first half they more than matched their opponents but still ended trailing by 20 points and dominated the second only to concede 3 converted tries on Derby's rare visits to the Newark half.
Newark tightened their defence and cut out many of their basic errors but still found it impossible to produce the scores which their efforts and spirit thoroughly deserved.
Newark again made multiple changes with a new center partnership of Mark
Akauola, on his debut, and Jock McKinnon while Paul Cook moved to
full-back. Up front Chris Coen came in at No 8 for his first game of the
season and Pete Corner moved into the second row in place of Richard
Primmett.
The game was delayed when the referee was held up by an accident on the A38 and then appeared to be Derby's main defender in an opening 10 minutes which saw Newark produce most of the attacks.
However, the home backs showed their prowess on 11 minutes to create
plenty of space on the left to run in a try and their excellent handling and support work created a second and a 10 point lead 5 minutes later.
Newark were continually causing problems for the home side and, on 22
minutes, scrum-half Danny Coen disrupted a ball behind the Derby scrum to start a series on attacks which included Akauola bouncing his way through the defence and Taua'a also putting in an aggressive run before Cook was robbed having appeared to cross the line.
With Corner and Mark Staines dominating the lines-out Newark continued to exert pressure without finding a way through Derby's defence but it was a breakout by Ian Tomlinson which saved the day when Derby attacked strongly on the half hour.
A third try, this time converted, after 33 minutes when Derby ran wide with a raking 45 metre move only served to flatter the home side who moved onto 20-0 with a penalty on the stroke of half-time.
The scrummaging of props Ben Vidler and Mickey Barker together with the battling Chris Coen and 100% aggression of Taua'a, all ably supported by the lively Danny Coen, kept Derby forced onto the back foot as Newark tried desperately to claw back the score and on 50 minutes when they took a scrum against the head, Danny Coen's break was stopped just short and Derby had several desperate minutes before creating a breathing space.
However, another take against the head on 54 minutes saw a strong attack by Cook and Martin Brummitt only just failed to to get the ball to Alex
Statham before being swallowed up by the cover defence.
More pressure only ended when Akauola had the ball kicked out of his hands as he tried to pick up off the ground but all the good work was undone on 62 minutes when a desperate long kick into the Newark 22 saw the defence hesitate, get caught in possession and, from a tap penalty Derby increased their lead with a further converted try.
Derby stretched their lead to 34-0 3 minutes later with a converted try as they poured through on a rare spell in the Newark half but the visitors continued to attack and a quickly taken penalty by Danny Coen led to a 40 metre move which saw Taua'a go over in the corner, only for the final pass to be judged forward, but with Derby penalised on their own line, he had the satisfaction of crossing for the try which proved scant consolation for all the side's hard work and, inevitably, Derby add a further converted try with the last move of the match as the broke loose from their own 22.
Next Saturday Newark host Burton in the Intermediate Cup, kick-off 3pm, as they strive to break their competitive duck.

Oh brother! Did an errant 8-year old Newarkite write this? Most people now have the good grace to admit their parochialism! More importantly, almost banter-free. Sense of humour transplant for one!
