Report from Burton website while we wait for Robin's version. (So how many 2nd team do not have a number of players with first team experience! Did they not notice that 6 of the squad had Colts experience!!)

Once again Burton Development XV took to the field with a side that was a mixture of regular players plus five ‘B’ team players and soon realised that the visiting Derby side were full of confidence and rugby with several of their number having first team experience. The game started swiftly and Derby’s forwards powered towards the Burton line only to be stopped by some excellent Burton defence. But after five minutes a massive effort by the Derby pack saw them force their way over for a try and they followed this two minutes later with another similar score. Burton kicked-off trailing 0-12 but soon hit back when good quick ball was spun out to the backs by Ben Peach travelling smoothly along the back line the final pass saw Gareth Sutton score a try in the corner to mark his first game back after seven weeks of injury. Ten minutes later Burton pulled level when Sutton dived over the line to touch down for his second try of the game as he followed up Gavin Cole’s cross kick. Cole’s conversion levelled the scores at 12-12, but five minutes before the break Derby got their third try to take a 12-17 lead into the second half.

With it all to play for Burton kicked-off to get the second half underway and for the next ten minutes the game flowed from end to end as both sides tried to play open rugby. This period of play was halted when Derby’s winger broke clear to run forty metres for a converted try to increase his sides lead to 12-24. With Burton defending well against some powerful Derby attacks a great tackle by Richard Langslow saw the ball spill free and Ian Baker was on hand to pick-up the ball and start a great counter attack. The ball flowed through several pairs of hands before Matt Tivey, making a welcome return, showed a powerful turn of pace and power to race thirty metres before off loading to Simon Paupe who dived in at the corner for a well deserved try and take the score to 17-24. But with twenty minutes remaining Derby’s fitness began to tell and they ran in four converted and one unconverted tries, while Burton could only look on in admiration at their pace and power. However, to their credit Burton did not stop tackling or trying to create forward progress with Baker, Langslow Peach and Jamie Parker all tackling like demons while Cole, Tivey and Paupe were constant threats with little darting runs. The final score line 17-57 does not fully reflect the game because for 75% of the game Burton battled strongly and were never out of contention and only the final twenty minute onslaught gave the match a one-sided look.
