After some impressive wins in recent weeks Derby 4's welcomed Belper to the Pasture of Pain looking to secure Pennant League points. Mein captain, Tim "THE BRRRAAAAIINNN" Flower, maintained the policy of having one new player in the team every week with Simon Rolph making his debut at fly-half in place of the crocked Dave Richards. "Dancing" Dave still made his presence felt however, providing words of wisdom from the sideline.
Derby produced an excellent start when, just minutes into the match, Grizzly Adams took an excellent line out, popped the ball into Ian "Booya" Bowyer hands, who exploded down the blindside through the opposition hooker for his fourth try of the season. Scott Johnson produced his best Jonny Wilkinson impression to slot the conversion from wide out to make the score
7 - 0. Would this be the start of a thrilling display of running rugby and another cricket score for the 4's. Unfortunately not.
The game descended into a scrappy affair with penalties galore and the ref needing a new whistle. Despite running good lines Derby's backs just couldn't find the final pass, the normally reliable Joe "Grizzly" Adams and Rob "Caveman" Wilson couldn't exert their primeval influence on the line-out and the scrum, anchored by Dave Savage, was also a bit shaky. Belper pulled back a score before the half thanks to their constantly sniping scrum-half but Johnson kept Derby in front with some more deadeye kicking.
A re-shuffle in the pack saw Flower make a captain's sacrifice and move forward to prop as well as the introduction of Nathan Ritchie at second row.
Belper soon found themselves on the scoresheet thanks to a push over try leaving the game hanging in the balance.
Despite some good running from "Chopper" Palour and tireless effort from the forwards Derby couldn't get back into the game. However, as Belper were seemingly effected by a disease rendering unmarked players invisible, Derby defended well with some hard hits from Rolph and one particularly sneaky steal from Gary I'Anson. In fact, the Willow was unlucky not to have more joy with the kick and chase, especially when their full-back dropped on the loose ball and the ref not only wanted to give him time to get up but also pop back to the changing rooms, have a shower, jump in his car, pop home and have a bit of tea before finally deciding to get up.
Any inconsistencies in refereeing or performance were rendered irrelevant by the one constant of the day - Scott Johnson's trusty left kicking boot. The classy centre booted the ball with admirable accuracy all afternoon (how's that for alliteration!) to finish with a personal haul of 20 points. Other telling contributions included Thras (I'm not spelling his surname, you can't make me) filling in ably at scrum-half, Daz Middleton doing a passable impression of a charging Rhino and a cranial malfunction from THE BRAAAIINNN - if you are going to take a quick line-out, at least make sure it goes far enough!

Final Score 25-14
