Nuneaton 5 Derby 23

Awesome performance by the Beests against a Nuneaton side that has clearly recruited to boost their promotion drive (well they can get a 2nd team up now). Nuns looked dangerous on the driving maul and opened the scoring with one, but a DG and 2 pens from PB took Derby into a half-time lead.

With the wind behind them in the 2nd half Nuneaton continued with their driving mauls but Derby defended staunchly and actually scored 2 more tries themselves, both from driving mauls and both converted by PB.

This was definitely an un-Beestlike performance in term of 'champagne style' but it was a tremendous result, achieved through a collective belief in each other and rock-like defence. League winners need to be able to perform in different ways in different circumstances and this Derby did!! No player should be singled out for mention, this was a great team performance.

.... and who witnessed this mementous win - Robin, Richard and Colin Lucas, Eddy Dell and me. No coaching team, no first team (other than Ed) and no 'proper' Alicadoos. Disappointing

Oh yes, forgot to mention a 'no show' from one player adding to the Beests problems. Along with other cry-offs the 6 replacements were down to just 2.

Awesome Defence. Simply AWESOME.

The 13 man rolling maul to give Bus his try was inspired and dynamic, whilst the rolling maul to get Kenty over the whitewash was poetry in motion, and the defence against Nun's own rolling maul was immense.
The backs defence ( with a combined centre age of 76, good job ratty didn't show!) held firm against some good Nun's attacks from their young back line, with some south sea (fijian)influences.

Just wanted to say it was a pleasure to be involved in the game. Great result gained from a tremendous effort by everyone.

Thanks to Colin for orgainsing the fixture, I must admit i wasn't sure we should have been pushing for this fixture. But I was wrong, fantastic game. I'm still smiling now!!

Obviuously not everyone shared the view that the forwards played well, judging by the selection for Saturday

‘I predict a mmuurrghhhhh, I predict a stampede!!’

Wildebeests 23 – 5 Nuneaton 2nds

This latest NCA encounter was sure to be an interesting one. Facing National league opposition in a midweek fixture was sure to be a classic encounter. And it lived up to expectations!! The surface was immaculate considering the freezing conditions and this allowed for a free flowing game.

Early exchanges didn’t bode well for the Beests as Nuneaton recycled ball and constantly turned the oncoming Beest defence. The back three performed exceptionally well to deal with some interesting kicks, with Radox returning kicks with interest! Eventually the Beests imposed themselves with some tactical kicking to gain precious yards and territorial advantage. Some tough midfield hits prevented Normski or Wigley from breaching the Nun’s defence. Headlights fed the Jackal who slotted a drop goal to get the scoreboard ticking. Nun’s were next on the board with a forwards try. A rumbling pack made big inroads in to the Beest defence. A hint of ‘truck and trailer’ was overlooked as the Beest pack was left helpless to stop the try. Dancing Pete hit Fred from the lineout and our pack rumbled forward to gain a penalty. The Jackal nudged the ball over from 30m. Rich Maddogs replaced the injured Cox midway through the half. Headlights kept the pack moving. Cuban Trevor and the No.8 Buss made big breaks around the fringes. Another penalty by the Jackal just drifted wide. The final score of the half came when the Nun’s midfield were caught offside in midfield. The Jackal nudged from straight in front of the posts. Half time score 9-5.

The ref was still happy with the freezing conditions so the second half began. Nun’s had the lion’s share of possession and recycled ball. The Beest defence never shied away from the physicality of this battle. Territory was gained by the ref’s interpretation of the contact situation. On many occasions the Beests were on the wrong end of the decisions. The forwards repeatedly slammed the door shut as Nun’s drove towards the line. When the ball was moved big hits turned ball over. Only a couple of half breaks broke the first line of defence but the Beest spirit showed as massive cover tackles prevented any further Nuneaton scoring. The Beests did score 2 tries with very limited possession. Barbara ball allowed the Jackal to break blind and grubber through, several quick rucks then took the ball into the Nun’s 22. A maul developed and an immense drive allowed the No8. Buss to cross the whitewash. The Jackal added the nudge. The Beest lineout functioned like clockwork all night. A kick to the corner allowed this well-oiled machine to produce some excellent ball. Just like the Nun’s pack, the Beests made yards around the fringes. Eventually Kentos fell over the line for the try. Again the Jackal added the nudge. Some interesting play nearly engineered a length of the field try but to no avail. Late pressure could of added further points, but the freezing conditions caused the ball to be knocked on.

This game wasn’t the prettiest in terms of free flowing rugby but probably the sternest test this season. The forward’s work ethic and the Beest spirit was the cornerstone of this victory. Massive D and great tactical rugby won the day for the Beests. This ensured that the Beests remain firmly planted at the top of the table. Lets make sure we stay there!!!
