Wildebeests 53 – 8 Neward 2nd XV

An away day in the Newark sunshine was the Beests fixture after Bromsgrove cried off. Earlier in the season, the Beests ran away 65-0 winners. Would today bring a repeat performance. Late changes in personnel meant the average age of the squad was greatly reduced with the addition of some promising colts.

Honorary chief Beest ‘Cuban Trevor’ led a ponderous herd out into the sunshine. The first score went to Newark as the Beests infringed at a ruck. The Newark 15, slotted the penalty. The familiar sound of the herd then took control of the half. The jackal replied soon after nudging a penalty. Some good recycling allowed Hutch and Wiggers to run havoc in the centre. Wiggers cut through to reach the line only for the ref to be unsighted. Radox then released young Cornfield who fed fellow winger Mucas, who was tackled only three metres short of the line. Form the line out; the forwards drove over. The flying Haggis popped up with the ball. The Jackal missed the nudge. Newark had some good possession but the formidable Beest defence was back to its best. Barbara created the next try as Cornfield was released from the traps to scamper in. Nudge added by the Jackal. Dancing Pete created the next try as he hit an awesome line to release Hutch. His twinkle toed step created a gap, which Wiggers galloped through to officially get him on the score sheet. Nudge added by the Jackal. The best score of the half came from some excellent ball retention. The back row of Cox, Moore and Shucksmith led the charge down the blindside. The front row union of Kentos and Dancing Pete showed their flair as they broke through and linked to put the chief, Cuban Trevor in for the score. Nudge missed by the Jackal. Half time score 27-3.

Squad rotation saw Tizard and Woodward get a run on the wings. Some good tactical kicking allowed the Beests to apply pressure to the Newark line. Cormack and Mills worked relentlessly to provide quick ball. Hutch was the next to score, showing good strength as he boshed over. Nudge added by the Jackal. Both sides tried to play a free flowing style, which left gaps all over the field. Woodward exposed this fact by cantering down the wing and feeding Wiggers to score. Nudge added by the Jackal. Further changes saw Mucas and Cornfield return as veterans Wiggers and Jackal left the action. Ratty then waved his magic wand to set up the next try. Hutch hit the gap at pace and danced his way over. Nudge added by Mucas. Newark had had several earlier attempts at crossing the beest line only to be halted in their tracks. On this occasion, persistence paid off as then worked over from close range. Kentos got the final score of the day. A great take in the line out allowed him to moonwalk over from quite a distance. Nudge missed by Mucas.
Final score, 53-8. Well done to the Colts who acquitted themselves well!!

A pleasing return to the type of form associated with this squad. Another similar performance will be required next week as Cheltenham visit the Serengeti in NCA action. Twenty-eight down and five to go!!!

The Jackal (Beest Statistician)
