Bedford Athletic 7 - 28 BEESTS
The Beests set off for Bedford with their large band of suporters (Mrs Gas, the 2 little gasses, (sarin and mustard), Piet van Kruger and The Old Berk) arriving rather late as the journey took somewhat longer than expected. The Bedford coach announced that he had 6 subs, and asked if he could use them all. The Beests agreed and, so as to increase our subs to 4, asked P van Kruger to get changed.
A lovely afternoon saw the Beests kick off, and after 15 minutes of pressure they came away with 3 points from a penalty knocked over by absentee captain PB. The BEEESTS were now in the ascendent, with the Bedford scrum stuck in reverse gear, and it was not long before a nice movement saw Sanjay cross the whitewash on the right to add another 5 points. The Absentee missed the nudge. Next on the scoreboard was Dancing Pete: again The Absentee missed the nudge. Just before half time Maddog 1 blasted over for another try, and The Absentee, being the model of consistency missed the nudge. (What did he come back for????). Half time saw Headlights and Kentos Kentos Ghali being replaced by van Kruger and Ben Crumb.
The second half got underway and some early BEESTIE pressure failed to produce the goods, and Bedford, pouncing on a loose pass produced a flowing movement to score under the posts. To this they added the conversion:
Bedford 7 Beests 18
Was this going to be a return to the bad old ways where the Beests lost interrest half way through a game?? NO. Pawpaw, who was having yet another mighty game, blasted over for a 5 pointer, and van Kruger missed the nudge. Maddog 1 then decided that he had had enough, and was replaced by Nick van Crumb, and Summo came on for Dancing Pete who had had another great game. It was at this point that the Bedford coach, somewhat embarrassed by the fact that his scrum had just claimed the world record for reverse speed on a rugby field, pointed out that his scrum was not up to its usual strength. He was somewhat suprised/disbelieving to find that 4 of THE MIGHTY BEEEESTS front 5 were Colts age!!!! More pressure produced a good try for van Kruger to leave the final score:
Bedford 7 - 28 Beests.
