The Great Wildebeest In The Sky is looking after his MIGHTY BEESTS: despite our close loss to Old Patesians we are still top of the NCA Second Team Championship, as Leicester Lions called off their game with Nuneaton, thereby losing the game by default.

However The Great Wildebeest tells me that he may not be so magnanimous if we lose again!

Jackal, you should never let historical facts get in the way of a good narrative, so don't worry about the incidents.
(Though this is slightly worrying, as you were involved in most of them!)

‘Where’s your Beest at, Where’s your Beest at??’

Wildebeests 5 – 6 Old Patesians

The Serengeti was a sad place to visit on Saturday as the Beests lost an NCA encounter that they should have won comfortably. Old Pats travelled to Derby in the hope of doing the double over the Beests. This tale didn’t go as scripted.

A strong Beest side started quite brightly during the opening encounters. A wealth of possession wasn’t turned into points as the Beests lacked the killer instinct. Old Pats looked solid in the tight and their big back row caused disruption to the flow of the game. When not in possession, poor tackling allowed the visitors to move towards the Beest 22. Eventually some pressure paid off as No.8 Buss fed Wiggers who drew in 2 defenders before putting the Jackal into the corner. He failed to add the nudge. Further attacks were stifled through poor decision-making and inconsistent handling. The usual free flowing style was found wanting? The Jackal had a chance to extend the lead with a penalty in front of the posts. How he missed, no one knows. Wilcox nearly scored before the break after Kentos, Barny and Normski linked to free the dancing machine. The ref was unsighted of the handling in the ruck. This summed up the half, as the Beests never seemed to get the upper hand or the rub of the green. Half time score 5-0.

Playing into the wind second half would prove a tough task. Old pats stated their intentions early by keeping the ball tight and pinning the Beests deep in their own half. When we had the ball, the Welsh Wizard and the back three rarely received quick enough ball to hurt the opposition. A penalty allowed the visitors to cut the lead to 2 points. The Beests spent the next 15 minutes defending their line as Pats pressed for a try. The defence held firm and the Beest defence never looked like being breached. Old pats took the lead when the ref gave a dubious off side decision directly under the posts. 6-5 down with 20 minutes to go shook the team. A change of tactics allowed Barny to pressure the Pats back three and relieve some pressure. This paid dividends as the openness of the game allowed the Beests to produce quicker ball. Finally questions were being asked of the Old Pats defence. The Jackal missed another penalty to take the lead. Repeated penalties allowed the Beests to move deep into the 22. A great line out take and drive set up a driving maul, only for the visitors to collapse and concede another penalty. The same again provided a great chance to score only for the ref to award the scrum to the visitors. One final attack nearly bared fruit as Normski fed Wiggers 5 metres from the line. Good cover tackling prevented him from crossing the line. Final score 5-6.

A sour pill to taste in a game where the Beests has so much possession. Missed tackles and missed opportunities cost dearly and that could cost us the league. With only a few fixtures remaining, consistency is essential for the Beests to rekindle the magical touch.

The Jackal (Beest Statistician)

SQUAD: Wigley, Burrows, Williams, Collier, Gandolfo, Barnwell, Lucas, Cormack, Wilcox, Kent, Mills, Atherton, West, Archer, Bussell, Moore, Maddocks P, Odell
